Christopher Columbus’ discovery of the Americas set the precedent for the European conquest of it. In fact, his tactics of taking land, wealth, and labor from the indigenous populations were carried out by many of the Europeans who later came to the Americas. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, whose country eventually benefited from this endeavor, financially supported Columbus. However, not all people included benefited from Columbus’ ‘discovery’ of the Americas. It also led to the decimation of several populations of indigenous peoples. Bartlomà © de Las Casas provided a first hand account of the Spanish conquest of Hispaniola. In his account, Las Casas states â€Å"the multitude of people who had originally lived on [Hispaniola]†¦ was consumed at such a rate that in those eight years ninety percent had perished.† Furthermore, Adam Smith reported that â€Å"to the natives, however†¦ all the commercial benefits which can have re sulted from [the discovery of America] have been sunk and lost in the dreadful misfortunes which they have occasioned.† Through comparing these sources from different time periods and regions, we can confirm that Columbus’ discovery of the Americas led to drastic consequences for the Native Americans, whilst improving the quality of life and economic standing for Europeans. Teleology comes from the Greek roots telos, it focuses on the consequences which our actions may have. When we make choices that results in the correct consequences, then we are acting morally. When we make choices that result in the incorrect consequences, then we are acting immorally. Deontology comes from the Greek roots deon meaning duty, it focuses on independent moral rules or duties. In order to make the correct moral choices, we must understand what our moral duties are and what correct rules helps us regulate these duties. Johnny’s journey revealed that a lot of the individuals in high authority has an opinion that even though it may be wrong what he done to Wendy. A minister was asked if forgives the crime and advise was given for Johnny to turn himself in, This advise fell on deaf ears and Johnny didn’t follow through with the advice because he felt that he shouldn’t be punished for murdering his girlfriend. Multiple attorneys were asked if they would represent Johnny and all but one said â€Å"NO†. The case was hard to defend due to the media attention that it would get and because what would the chances of a person, who didn’t have any prior history and god status, being convicted. The question was asked, Would this attorney â€Å"Snitch† on Johnny if he confessed about another crime that would exonerate him to death row? Sinclair Lewis Elmer Gantry is a great book because it has credibility, a timeless theme, and it has the necessary action. Any book that can do that is a great book. The credibility of Elmer Gantry is something that will keep this book eternally great. Although the actual time period is dated, the plot is not dated. Most people can relate to the different characters in the book. Elmer is a pompous football player who thinks that he is higher than any religion. However, people try, and successfully convert him. He attempts to please two masters at first: his vices and God. He eventually makes the decision to live by God, but of course he will occasionally fool around with his old vices, especially adultery. Most people know someone who is like this and still somehow succeeds although he shouldnt have. Although Elmer is more extreme than the people the reader is likely to know, he is still a very credible characters. Another thing that makes this a timeless novel is that it has the needed action to attract the reader who only wants entertainment. Elmer often gets into fights that will keep the reader in the edge of their seat. He will face odds that most would run away from, but also has times when he backs down from a fight, such as when Brother Naylor and Brother Bains confront him about ?fooling around? with Lulu. It also has enough opportunities for the modern person to think about sex although it doesnt graphically say what happens. This makes all the sex scenes up to the reader which may dismiss them or relish on them. A book with this combination of sex and violence makes it a book that it is even suitable for easy reading for the person who does not want to learn anything. Finally, Elmer Gantry is a timeless book because it has a universal theme: humans will always sin. It is most obviously seen through Elmer, although it is seen in other characters as well. Elmer has had a history of rai sing hell and being an agnostic. He converts, but still suffers the same problems. He still drinks, smokes, and has casual sex. He gets accused of messing around with one of the parishioners of his first church, and when he is able to escape that ordeal, he then gets kicked out of seminary for drinking. He takes some time off as a business man, but ends back in the ministry, this time in a traveling evangelism show, sort of the predecessor of televangelists. He gets off of smoking and drinking, but is still an adulterer, which is his major character flaw. He eventually gets married, and takes his preaching seriously. But he still commits adultery with at least two women. And just when the reader thinks that he is going to clean his act, he gets back into the cycle at the end of the novel. Although he is the most prolific sinner in the novel, he has company. Jim, his first true friend, has all the same vices as Elmer. Sharon is an adulteress and Frank is an agnostic. Everyone in this story has vices that they will not, or cannot, give up. That is true with all humans, which is what makes the theme universal. Everyone should read a book like this because he can learn something from it. However, many right wing conservative Christians want to censor this book because they say it attacks the Christian religion and is in poor taste. They are completely wrong, however. Unions are so fundememtally important in at this time when a sense of community seems harder and harder to connect with. The Dept of Revenue, Local 150, leadership is actively engaged in an aggressive campain to involve the lower paid workers in their agency by doing one on one contacts with ten identified work areas. The activists are introducing themselves, and finding out what the workers need. Pretty basic stuff, but often shyed away from by leaders because you have to put yourself and your beliefs out in the open. The general membership is responding, over 30% of their members attended the monthly meeting (thats about 200 members), members unannomously voted to send 500.00 dollars of their treasury funds to the SEIU relief fund, the leaders have set up collection cans throu gh out their complex for folks to make ongoing donations to the SEIU Relief Fund, and the local has plans to revisit another 500.00 dollar pledge next quarter for when the attention of the public might start to waver. The families will need help long into the future when right now they cant imagine their needs. I am speaking from experience as I lost my father, a State Police Officer, in 1967. The fact that people who have never met give what they can to strangers in need is so reassuring. He was at work the day the jetliner hit..but, fortunately, he was on the other side of the Pentagon and got out unharmed. Two weeks prior, his office was movedfrom the side struck by the hijacked jetliner. My brother, Andy, lives in Suffren, N.Y. His neighbors son is a NYC fireman listed as missing and presumed dead. My wife, Faylene, and I sent the SEIU relief fund a $50 check and I donated a pint of blood. I felt the hurt and sadness all around me in the city for the day and a half that I was stranded there. It was as tangible as the chemical smell in the air. I came home to DC by train, as the airports were all still closed. Many people in Penn Station voiced concern over the lack of security there in the chaotic crush of people trying to leave the city. Sure enough, our train was halted for a bomb scare as we approached Newark. One thing that became very clear to me, is that we cannot police our way to peace either at home or abroad. The freedom we cherish can only be achieved with a basic level of good will. No amount of police presence could secure Penn Station or most of the public spaces we travel through each day. Our society works, because people feel they have something to gain and something to lose. We need to think about what it is that drove the terrorists to such acts of desperation. This incident could have easily happened to mi familia. On Tuesday, I was returning from beautiful San Luis Obispo when I turned on the TV in my hotel room to hear the news of the day while I was getting dressed. When I saw what happened, my first thought was what third world country WAS attacked by terrorists then I realized it was New York City. I realized at the moment ALL our lives have been changed forever by this cowardly act. All week long two televisions has been turned on at work to let us know whats going on. My first thought was of the Port Authority men and women whom I met last year at the SEIU Convention in Pittsburgh names I have forgotten but whose generosity to my local have made a mark on my heart. All week long I have been telling my co-workers that WE have family in that building, and of the generosity of other SEIU locals to us and that now is our time to give back in a BIG way. And now with the update to the SEIU website, I see we have more family members involved. Words cannot express my sadness, but I know my action will. I am reminded of a slogan used by Andy Stern: Pray for the dead, fight for the living. I pray each day for the souls of all those union brothers and sisters who showed me (and my local) kindness and support through the years and I fight for the living, their families. Personally, I will be contributing financially and will be forwarding the e-mail send from Andy to all my co-workers. I will be asking our members (and non-members) to reach VERY deep into their pockets to contribute as well. To think of the lost, of a mother, father, brother, sister, and friend how can we not act? Personally, I will be forwarding a check for $100 to you by the end of the work day because the great family of SEIU is in need, and how could I do anything less?
